The Revs, who were in the middle of a 2 game losing streak, defeated Chicago for the third straight time. Second half goals from Juan Agudelo, the EPL bound striker and Kelyn Rowe was enough to secure a needed victory over the visiting Chicago Fire

New England improved to a (9-9-6) record after beating Eastern Conference rival club, the Chicago Fire at Gillette on Saturday night in front of 14,630 fans.

The hosts were in command throughout the first half, controlling the ball for more than 60%. However, Chicago had two of the best scoring chances in the first half.

Chicago’s best chance of the match came in the 18th minute, when Mike Magee, the league’s top goal scorer, hit the post on a powerful shot which the rebound was saved by New England Goalkeeper Matt Reis who received the starting nod  over Bobby Shuttleworth. Reis Recorded his third clean sheet of the season in as many match.

Agudelo back-heeled effort broke the deadlock just 9 minutes after the break, while Kelyn Rowe, who missed a good scoring chance 2 minutes  prior, doubled the lead in the dying minutes of the match.

The first score of the match came after a long ball by Chris Tierney which found Agudelo who then chipped Fire Goalkeeper Sean Johnson back- heeled with the exterior of his right foot.

Newly acquired Charlie Davies made his debut for New England; he came in the match for Chad Barrett in the 79th minute. He hinted after the match that he may be fully ready in two or three weeks.

“I’m glad that we got the three points. That’s the most important thing. Am I happy with my play? Absolutely not. But it’s good to get the junk out of my system now, before we start getting into tougher situations. Just getting out there felt great.  This is a team where I think I’ll really be put in a position to succeed. The midfielders create a lot of space for the forwards and provide great chances and great service, so I’m psyched. I’m psyched for the games ahead and once I get my feet back under me after the craziest two weeks, three weeks. I think things will go much better than they had today.”  Stated Davies.

Kelyn Rowe sealed the deal for New England when he converted a rebound in the box in the concluding minute of the match.

Up next, New England will return to MLS action on Sunday, Aug. 25, to host the Philadelphia Union while Chicago will return home to face Sporting KC on Aug. 23.

Line-ups:

New England Revolution: Matt Reis, Chris Tierney, Jose Goncalves ©, A.J. Soares, Andrew Farrell, Diego Fagundez (Ryan Guy 86), Lee Nguyen, Scott Caldwell, Kelyn Rowe, Chad Barrett (Charlie Davies 79), Juan Agudelo (Saer Sene 68)

Substitutes Not Used: Bobby Shuttleworth, Jerry Bengtson, Kevin Alston, Stephen McCarthy

On August 14 2013, Jozy Altidore scored his second career hat trick with the US national team against Bosnia to power the US to a 4-3 victory over the 13th ranked nation. He became the first USA player to score a goal in five straight games. The newly acquired Sunderland striker, Josmer Volmy “Jozy” Altidore sat down with HaitiTempo for an in depth interview.

In the exclusive interview, Jozy talks about his recent hot scoring streak for the USMNT, his new club, his foundation and more.

HT: Jozy, you scored a hat trick against Bosnia and netted at least one goal in your last five games with the US national team, what does all this mean to you?

aboutshot2

Altidore: Obviously, when you score a goal in any kind of match, it’s a great feeling. However, the most important thing to me has been the fact we have won all those matches, with three of them being World Cup qualifiers.

HT: What is it like for you as a striker to play for Jürgen Klinsmann who is considered as one of the best strikers to play the game?

Altidore: I think it has been a great opportunity playing for him and learning from one of best strikers in the history of the sport. He pushes us individually and as a collective group, and has us focused every time we step of the field. It’s been a very positive experience.

HT: You recently transferred from AZ Alkmaar (where you scored 31 goals in 40 matches last year) to Sunderland in the EPL, what prompted you to make that decision?

Altidore: I just felt that if I was going to move, Sunderland was the place I needed to be at. It was a perfect fit for me. The whole transition going from AZ Alkmaar to Sunderland was smooth and occurred with ease. This was just a perfect situation and a tremendous opportunity for me.

HT: How is your relationship so far with the players, coaching staff and fans at Sunderland?

Altidore: Everything has been great since I arrived at Sunderland. Paolo Di Canio is an excellent coach and has gotten us ready for a successful Barclays Premier League campaign. I quickly developed a good relationship with my teammates and the entire Sunderland organization is first class all the way.

HT: What are your goals and expectations for the season?

Altidore: I just want to continue to approve as a player and help the team achieve success any way I can. I am excited for the season to get rolling and look forward to the challenges ahead.

HT: You are involved in a lot of charitable work with your foundation, can you tell us about the Jozy Altidore Foundation?

Altidore: The foundation was started in 2011″ with the mission being to help underprivileged/at-risk children across the world through various projects and programs. The foundation fosters educational/recreational learning and excellence by working with communities, athletes and educators to provide children with various avenues of growth and success beneficial for their future.

HT: Your foundation partnered with other entities to help kids at an orphanage in Haiti and the foundation is also planning to build a water well in the Cabaret area, can tell us more about these projects?

IMG_2230

Altidore: My foundation teamed up with a group of student athletes from the University of Pittsburgh, along with adidas and the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, to help an orphanage in need. I was extremely impressed by the Pitt athletes spending time in Haiti helping these children, so we were more than happy to help get them what they needed like soccer balls, shirts, socks, jerseys, etc … Hopefully, we do more events like this in the very near future.

In regard to the well project, my foundation worked with Generosity Water to set up the project, then we raised the $6,000 through our social-media platforms via donations, which mainly came from the fans and supporters. It was truly amazing to see everyone rally around this project and I can’t wait to see the finished product during a visit to Haiti some time next year.

HT: During the last Gold Cup you tweeted about Haiti and showed your support for the team, did you watch their matches? If yes, were you impressed by any player from the Haitian national team?

Altidore: Yes, I got to see bits and pieces of the matches and was happy to see how competitive Haiti has become. The country has improved leaps and bounds on the field. Hopefully, Haiti will continue to get better and move forward on the international stage.

HT: What advice can you offer to kids in Haiti and throughout the world who aspires to be like you one day?

IMG_22071

Altidore: I would just keep telling them to work hard and never give up on their dreams as athletes. If you put in the time and effort on a consistent basis, take care of your body, stay away from the bad things out there in the world and maintain focus, everything you dream of happening can become reality.

—

The 23 years old Altidore is the son of Haitian parents, the record holder for most goals (all competitions) in a single season by an American in a European league. He made his professional debut in 2006 at the age of 16 with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. On 5 July 2013, he signed a 4 year contract with English Premier League club Sunderland.

The New England Revolution has been looking for a striker who can score goals on a consistent basis, ever since Saer Sene’s injury from last season. This year, young phenom, Diego Fagundez has been carrying the team but the questions regarding the club’s ability to make it to the playoffs will always linger.

A couple months ago, the Revs front office brought in Juan Agudelo who had a very good start with the club until he sustained an injury  in MLS Cup action against DC United. The young star’s presence with the club will vanish with his move to Stoke City in January. Thus, the club went shopping for the striker that can take them to the playoffs. With the MLS transfer window looming; they landed former USMNT forward Charlie Davies.

Davies (27) could make his debut for the New England Revolution this Saturday against the Chicago Fire. The American striker will bring to Gillette the worldwide experiences he gained while playing in Europe for Sochaux in France, Randers FC in the Danish league, and Hammarb, a Swedish Allsvenskan club. Davis is also no stranger to the MLS as he recently played for DC United.

After 23 games this season, the team only managed to score 27 goals in league action. A mere 1.17 goal average per game. Fagundez leads the pack with 7 goals, followed by Sene and Imbogo with 3 goals apiece. Honduran Forward Jerry Bengston who was signed last year to complement Sene in the offense, has been a complete disappointment this season, his only goal this season came in the opener against the Chicago Fire. The other striker on the roster, Chad Barrett has only scored 3 goals over the last 2 seasons with LA Galaxy and New England. Finally, the injured Juan Agudelo is now an afterthought after signing his pre-contract with the Potters.

Now enters Davis whose mission is to score goals consistently, a task that many other players have failed at. One thing for sure is that the former US striker can score, his best success at the club level came with Hammarby IF when he scored 21 goals in 56 appearances in only two seasons. He had a smaller impact with Sochaux but he scored 2 goals in 10 matches. He had his share of success in the MLS as well scoring 11 goals in the 2011 season for DC United. Davies represented his national team at many levels; he has scored 4 goals in 17 matches for the senior US men team.

Davies was badly hurt when his career began to show amazing potential in a car accident before the South African World Cup. He was not able to compete in the tournament for his country, he may now have a chance to gain the support of all the American fans for another chance for a spot on the national team and prove that he is a consistent and solid striker.

We do know that he has a knack for scoring; he can be a prolific scorer if he’s in the right place with a good supporting cast. In New England, he will team up with the likes of Lee Nguyen, Diego Fagundez, Kelyn Rowe and Saer Sene most of the time to run the offense.  His effectiveness with the club will depends on how much playing time he gets from Jay Heaps and how quick he build-up a chemistry with the young nucleus Revolution players.

This  is a good move for Davies mainly because he is familiar with the New England area. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire and attended Boston College before embarking to his wonderful professional career.

USA defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-3 on Wednesday in its first match after winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup. USA was down 2-0 at halftime, and then Jozy Altidore powered them to victory in the 2nd half by scoring three straight goals. It was Altidore’s second career hat trick with the US national team; the other came against Trinidad and Tobago in a 3-0 victory during FIFA World Cup Qualifying on April 1, 2009.

Eden Dzeko of Manchester City opened the score in the 8th minute of the the match on his own rebound from an initially saved ball by US Goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Vedad Ibisevic  headed home Bosnia’s second goal about 20 minutes later. Ibisevic received the ball from a cross from the right side by Zvjezdan Misimovic. The VfB Stuttgart striker then beat US defender Geoff Cameron to make it 2-0 for the host nation.

Eddie Johnson scored an easy goal for USA with a wide open net in front of him in the 55th minute to cut into the lead. Johnson who was well-positioned received a pass from Altidore who received a long pass from the AS Roma midfielder Micheal Bradley.

Altidore would take over the match by scoring three straight goals starting from the 59th minute to the 86th. Atidore’s second goal was the most beautiful of them all.  In the 84th minute of the match, he launched a powerful free kick in the upper left corner of the goal, giving Bosnia’s goalkeeper little time to react.
